Any US missiles fired at Syria will be shot down, launch sites targeted – Russian envoy to Lebanon !

On The Brink Of World War III - http://www.alamongordo.com

The Russian military reserves the right to shoot down missiles and destroy launch sites in the event of US aggression against Syria, Moscow’s envoy to Lebanon Alexander Zasypkin has warned.

Zasypkin stressed that “the Russian forces will confront any US aggression on Syria, by intercepting the missiles and striking their launch pads,” al-Manar TV website reported, citing the envoy.

The statement comes after Washington threatened a “forceful response” against Syria after an alleged chemical attack in the Damascus suburb of Douma on Saturday. The US was quick to pin the blame on the Syrian government, basing its accusations on unverified data and images, including reports from the infamous, rebel-linked White Helmets ‘civil defense’ group.

Moscow strikes back at US ‘anti-Russian’ threats about nuclear DOOMSDAY device

Moscow strikes back at US ‘anti-Russian’ threats about nuclear DOOMSDAY device

The Russian Foreign Ministry slammed US defence chiefs for increasing the chances of war after a report in the latest Nuclear Posture Review (NPR). In a statement today the ministry said the US accusations “have nothing to do with reality,” and expressed its “deep disappointment” with the report. Russian chiefs accused America of using anti-Russian rhetoric to justify “large-scale nuclear weapons buildup”.

WorldWarIII Russia US war coming - www.alamongordo.com

The NPR blamed Russia for developing a “nuclear drone torpedo”, sparking fears of war between the two military superpowers.
But Russian chiefs today said that the country would only use nuclear weapons in cases of aggression involving the use of weapons of mass destruction, or where the existence of the nation is at stake.

They attacked the trigger-happy US for treating “almost any use of military force as a reason for carrying out a nuclear strike against those deemed aggressors.” Russia warned that the US’s development of low-power nuclear munitions, together with its doctrine stating the right to a pre-emptive strike, would drastically increase the risk of nuclear annihilation even in “low-intensity conflicts.”
The country’s Foreign Ministry dismissed Washington’s accusations as “a dishonest attempt to shift its own culpability for the degradation of international and regional security onto others.”

And Moscow also expressed its anger over the fact that the US maintains and upgrades its tactical nuclear weapons in Europe, “in the immediate vicinity of the Russian borders.” Recently fears grew of a Russian-US military standoff after lethal surface-to-air missiles were placed on the disputed Ukrainian border. While top military brass warned that Russia is simulating all-out war with NATO in secret military drills.

US aircraft carrier group to be dispatched to Korean Peninsula

US AIRCRAFT CARRIER GROUP TO BE DISPATCHED TO KOREAN PENINSULA AMID RISING TENSIONS !

A US carrier group led by the USS Ronald Reagan will join US-South Korean naval drills that will take place near the Korean Peninsula in October, Japanese media report, citing the South Korean Defense Ministry. On Monday, the ministry revealed its plans in a report it submitted to the National Assembly, Japan’s Asahi Shimbun reports. According to the report, Seoul asked Washington to send the USS Ronald Reagan from the US Navy’s 7th Fleet, based in the Japanese town of Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, to join the exercises scheduled for October. The ministry also planned to conduct joint missile defense exercise together with the US and Japan later in September or in October. The drills are expected to be another demonstration of force by the US and its allies as tensions around the peninsula continue to rise following North Korea’s sixth nuclear test on September 3.

Following the test, Seoul held massive live-fire naval drills in the Sea of Japan on September 5 and then conducted a separate joint anti-submarine drill with the US just days later. Seoul also installed four more THAAD missile defense systems in Seongju County, some 300km south of the South Korean capital, in addition to the two launchers already deployed there.

The US also repeatedly flexed its muscles in the region following the North Korean test of what Pyongyang claimed was a hydrogen bomb. On September 9, two US strategic B1-B bombers conducted military exercises in the skies above the East China Sea together with a pair of Japanese F-15 fighter jets. A similar exercise, involving B-1B supersonic bombers and F-35B stealth fighters, was conducted by the US together with South Korea on September 18. The US warplanes flew close to the demilitarized zone along the border between North and South Korea, the Japan Times reports, citing South Korean military sources.

Pyongyang also conducted a missile launch, firing a projectile that passed through Japan’s airspace near Hokkaido, triggering a public alert. The missile then allegedly fell some 2,000 km east of the Japanese island. The US and North Korea leaders also exchanged threats of mutual destruction. Moscow and Beijing have repeatedly called for the diplomatic solution of the crisis around the Korean Peninsula and urged all sides to stop the escalation. The two nations have for months been pushing for the so-called “double freeze” initiative that would see North Korea suspend its missile and nuclear tests in exchange for South Korea and the US abandoning their joint military exercises.

Chinese-Russian naval drills begin off North Korea

CHINESE – RUSSIAN NAVAL DRILLS BEGIN OFF NORTH KOREA !

China and Russia have started joint naval drills in the waters near the Russia-North Korea border, local media reported. The exercises, which began on Monday off Russia’s southeastern port of Vladivostok, are the second part of China and Russia’s ‘Joint Sea-2017’ programme that started in June. The drills, which include submarine rescue and anti-submarine exercises, are not directly linked to increasing tensions over North Korea, China’s state-owned Xinhua news agency reported.

CHINA RUSSIA START NAVAL DRILLS OFF N-KOREA - http://www.Alamongordo.com/

The exercises are taking place in the Sea of Japan and, for the first time, the Okhotsk Sea. South Korea and the US also staged military drills in the Korean Peninsula on Monday, conducting bombing exercises involving six US planes and four South Korean fighter jets, according to Song Young-moo, the South Korean defence minister. Joint drills organised by Washington and Seoul are now being conducted “two to three times a month these days”, he said.

Tensions have been rising on the Korean Peninsula in recent weeks, following North Korea’s sixth, and most powerful, nuclear test to date on September 3. The UN Security Council (UNSC) voted unanimously to impose fresh sanctions on North Korea last week after a meeting on September 11 in response to the crisis. Pyongyang has claimed the measures – including a ban on textiles and a cap on oil supplies – will speed up North Korea’s nuclear weapons programme.

“The increased moves of the US and its vassal forces to impose sanctions and pressure on the DPRK will only increase our pace towards the ultimate completion of the state nuclear force,” a statement on North Korean state media said on Monday, using the acronym for the country’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

China and Russia have repeatedly called for a peaceful solution to the crisis. However, Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the UN, claimed the UNSC has now run out of options, and has warned the matter may now need to be turned over to the Pentagon. “We have pretty much exhausted all the things that we can do at the Security Council at this point… We’re trying every other possibility that we have, but there’s a whole lot of military options on the table,” she told CNN on Sunday. Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, claims Pyongyang needs a nuclear weapons programme to deter the US from invading the isolated state. The United States and South Korea are technically still at war with North Korea because the 1950-53 Korean conflict ended with a truce and not a peace treaty.

North Korea Preparation for War With US is Complete

NORTH KOREA CONFIRMS PREPERATION FOR WAR WITH US IS COMPLETE !

North Korea has warned of “catastrophic consequences” in response to any further provocations by the US, days after a US navy battle group was sent to waters off the Korean peninsula, and was met by Donald Trump with a repeated threat of unspecified unilateral action.
The US president said on Twitter that he would “solve the problem” of North Korea if China did not provide greater help in exerting pressure on its neighbour. The shrill rhetoric has been matched by a military build-up.

“We will hold the US wholly accountable for the catastrophic consequences to be entailed by its outrageous actions,” North Korea’s state-run Korean Central News Agency quoted a foreign ministry spokesman said.

war with north korea 2017 - www.alamongordo.com

“(North Korea) is ready to react to any mode of war desired by the US.”

The Guardian reports: The spokesman cited Washington’s refusal to rule out a pre-emptive strike against North Korean missile sites as justification for its nuclear program. “The prevailing grave situation proves once again that (North Korea) was entirely just when it increased in every way its military capabilities for self-defense and pre-emptive attack with a nuclear force as a pivot,” the spokesman said, according to KCNA. “We will take the toughest counteraction against the provocateurs in order to defend ourselves by the powerful force of arms.”

The US strike against a Syrian base is also being seen as a warning to North Korea after Donald Trump said Washington was prepared to act alone if China failed to exert more pressure on its neighbor to halt its missile and nuclear weapons programs.

White House officials have signaled that all options – including preemptive strikes – remain on the table in addressing North Korea’s steady advance towards developing long-range missiles capable of carrying a nuclear warhead as far as the US mainland. Meanwhile, Beijing has deployed 150,000 troops to its border with North Korea since a few weeks.

President Donald Trump and his South Korean counterpart, Moon Jae-in, have agreed to intensify economic and diplomatic pressure against North Korea over its repeated nuclear and missile tests. The two leaders shared a phone call Today, Sunday Sept. 17th  and their offices released a transcript of their conversation.

“President Trump and President Moon committed to continuing to take steps to strengthen deterrence and defense capabilities, and to maximize economic and diplomatic pressure on North Korea,” the White House said in a statement. Trump also tweeted about the phone call.
“Asked him how Rocket Man is doing,” Trump said on Twitter Sunday in an apparent reference to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “Long gas lines forming in North Korea. Too bad!”

War between US and North Korea could start at Any Moment !

A war between the US and N.Korea is on the brink of breaking out, China has said in a desperate warning to the world.

It comes as speculation mounted US President Donald Trump would launch a preemptive strike on the regime before this weekend. China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi, today said something drastic would have to be done to stop the world going down an “irreversible route”.

North Korea US World War III WW3 Carl Vinson Strike Force US Navy - http://www.alamongordo.com/

Speaking at a joint briefing with visiting French foreign minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, he warned that whichever side started the war “must assume the historic responsibility and pay the corresponding price.”

Kim Jong-un is expected to oversee North Korea’s biggest nuclear missile test ever this weekend – something the US is reportedly planning on stopping. Intelligence officials have revealed the US placed two devices capable of firing Tomahawk missiles into the peninsula.

American bombers have also been positioned in Guam ready to strike if necessary. And the US Carl Vinson has led a fleet of warships to the peninsula, along with Japanese allies.

China itself has reportedly sent just under 200,000 troops to the North Korea border to prepare for the expected onslaught. Officials are said to be worried that a strike by the US on NK could spark waves of refugees flooding over the border.

Yesterday, the US dropped the “mother of all bombs” on Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province in a bid to wipe out ISIS militants. There are suspicions the bomb – reportedly twice the size of the nuke dropped on Hiroshima – was used to send a message to Kim Jong-un that the US is serious about taking out its enemies with firepower.

China Deploys 150,000 Troops to North Korea to Prepare for US Strike !

The Chinese government has deployed 150.000 troops to the North Korean border to prepare for a strike from the United States following the missile airstrikes against Syria last week. The strikes against Syria have been widely interpreted as a warning to Kim Jong-Un from President Trump for continuing to conduct nuclear missile testing despite warnings from the international community.

China has now dispatched troops from the People’s Liberation Army forces to the Yalu River in anticipation of pre-emptive attacks as the US Navy moves the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier strike group from Singapore to North Korea.According to reports from Korea’s Chosun.com, The troops have been dispatched to handle North Korean refugees and “unforeseen circumstances”, such as the prospect of preemptive attacks on North Korea, the news agency said.

The Daily Mail reports: China’s top nuclear envoy arrived in Seoul Monday for talks on the North Korean threat, as the United States sent the naval strike group to the region and signaled it may act to shut down Pyongyang’s weapons program.

Speculation of an imminent nuclear test is brewing as the North marks major anniversaries including the 105th birthday of its founding leader on Saturday – sometimes celebrated with a demonstration of military might. Wu Dawei, China’s Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Affairs, met with his South Korean counterpart on Monday to discuss the nuclear issue.

The talks come shortly after Trump hosted Chinese leader Xi Jinping for a summit at which he pressed Pyongyang’s key ally to do more to curb the North’s nuclear ambitions. ‘(We) are prepared to chart our own course if this is something China is just unable to coordinate with us,’ US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said after the summit. He added however that Beijing had indicated a willingness to act on the issue.

‘We need to allow them time to take actions,’ Tillerson said, adding that Washington had no intention of attempting to remove the regime of Kim Jong-Un. The meeting between Xi and Trump came on the heels of yet another missile test by the North, which fired a medium-range ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan on Wednesday. The US Navy strike group Carl Vinson canceled a planned trip to Australia this weekend, heading toward the Korean peninsula instead, in a move that will raise tensions in the region.

World War III - US ready to strike North-Korea with Nuclear Missiles - Alamongordo - http://www.alamongordo.com

Seoul and Washington are also conducting joint military drills, an annual exercise which is seen by the North as a practice for war. Pyongyang is on a quest to develop a long-range missile capable of hitting the US mainland with a nuclear warhead and has so far staged five nuclear tests, two of them last year. Satellite imagery analysis suggests it could be preparing for a sixth, with US intelligence officials warning that Pyongyang could be less than two years away from its goal of striking the continental United States.

China, the US, South Korea and Japan all have dedicated envoys who meet at regular intervals to discuss the North Korean issue: a legacy of the long-stalled six-party process that also involved Pyongyang and Moscow. The North quit the negotiations in 2009. The isolated North is barred under UN resolutions from any use of ballistic missile technology, but repeated rounds of sanctions have failed to arrest its nuclear ambitions. Trump has previously threatened unilateral action against the reclusive state, a threat that appeared more palpable after Thursday’s strike on a Syrian airfield following an apparent chemical attack.

US National Security Adviser HR McMaster on Sunday criticized North Korea as a rogue nation engaged in provocative behavior and said denuclearisation of the peninsula ‘must happen’. ‘The president has asked them to be prepared to give us a full range of options to remove that threat,’ he said on Fox News, apparently referring to Trump’s advisers.

On the brink of World War III ?

Are we on the brink of World War III ?!?

The rumors of wars has certainly begun as we have more and more political figures either stating WW3 is just around the corner or is already here. Has World War III already begun? WWI began with an assassination, WWII began with Hitler’s invasion of Poland. But WWIII could certainly start differently.

As conservative talk show host Glenn Beck stated, WW3 is on the horizon and “nobody will recognize it yet.” Let’s look at a few of the prominent figures that warn us of WW3….

On the brink of world war III Nuclear Armageddon and the last world war for humankind - http://www.alamongordo.com/

Conflict is rampant on our planet unlike anything we’ve seen in recent memory: Israel, Palestine, Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, North Korea, we even have radical Islamic infiltration of our own government that will soon lead to war within our own borders.

But not everyone is fearful of such an event, in fact, some are even hoping for or even designing it. It’s been said that all wars are ‘banker wars’.  As Major General Smedley Butler puts it, War is a racket”.

If my sons did not want wars, there would be noneGutle Schnaper Rothschild

So here we are with virtually all major countries in the world bankrupt and on the verge of collapse. If we continue to follow history, a world war would certainly be pursuant to or preempt an economic collapse. It’s the mainstay for the ruling class utilize war to wipe the slate clean after fiat currencies, with their short 30-40 year life span, collapse.

Vladimir Putin States World War 3 is ‘Inevitable’

In a speech Putin stated that World War 3 is ‘inevitable’ and he has certainly done his part in setting the stage for a global confict, naming NATO and the U.S. as Russia’s greatest threats. He accuses NATO of ‘surrounding’ Russia and even signed a document stating that NATO has committed “violations of international law,” which is a very serious and inflammatory charge.

The following are excerpts of Putin’s speech delivered at the Valdai conference in Sochi, just a few days ago. The speech was directed at Western elites.

Russia will no longer play games with the United States and engage in back-room negotiations… Russia is prepared for serious agreements, but only if these agreements are conducive to collective security… All systems of global collective security now lie in ruins. There are no longer any international security guarantees at all and the party responsible for the destruction of global collective security is The United States of America…

…The builders of the New World Order have failed by having built a sand castleRussia favors a conservative approach to introducing innovations into the social order, but is not opposed to investigating and discussing such innovations, to see if introducing any of them might be justified…

…Russia has no intention of building an empire of their own, but will not go fishing in the murky waters created by America’s ever-expanding “empire of chaos…

…Russia’s challenges lie in developing her already vast territory)…Russia will not attempt to reformat the world in her own image, but neither will she allow anyone to reformat her in their image. Russia will not close herself off from the world, but anyone who tries to close her off from the world will be sure to reap a whirlwind. Neither is Russia willing to act as a savior of the world, as she has in the past…

…Russia does not wish for the chaos to spread, does not want war, and has no intention of starting oneHowever, today Russia sees the outbreak of global war as almost inevitable, is prepared for it, and is continuing to prepare for it. Russia does not war, nor does she fear it…

Russia does not intend to take an active role in thwarting those who are still attempting to construct their New World Order, However, Russia will oppose their efforts if they begin  to impinge on Russia’s key interests. Russia would prefer to stand by and watch them give themselves as many lumps as their poor heads can take. But those who manage to drag Russia into this process, through disregard for her interests, will be taught the true meaning of pain…

…Russia’s will rely not on the elites to set the tone for the future, and these decisions will result from the will of the people…”

RUSSIA IS IN WAR MODE !

The RAF has intercepted Russian military aircraft as they neared UK airspace for the second time  in the past week. This incident follows Norwegian interception of two Russian bombers last Wednesday. The Baltic countries are also witnessing a dramatic increase in Russian military violations of NATO air space in which the Russians appear to be testing their ability to penetrate the NATO’s air defenses.

Even the number of times that Japanese fighter jets have been forced to scramble to intercept Russian military aircraft has more than doubled in the last six months, amid  the escalating diplomatic tensions between Japan and Russia. Russia has even violated American airspace in Alaska with multiple air incursionS designed to test and discover the sophistications of  America’s ability to detect and intercept Russian fighters and nuclear bombers. Coupled with the air incursions, Putin has the Russian economy in war mode. He even has the Russian military prepared to militarily seize the “resource rich” Arctic. Latest news is that Russia deployed S-300 and S-400 air defenses in Syria and Russian MoD warned US-led coalition not to strike Syrian army…

The DoomsDay Clock

The Doomsday Clock Just Moved Closer To Midnight !

The Doomsday Clock has rung in 2017, and it is two-and-a-half minutes to midnight.

The symbolic timepiece – where midnight represents our species’ destruction through a global catastrophe – has been ticking since 1947. This year, for the first time, the clock was moved forwards 30 seconds rather than back or forwards in minutes.

Doomsday Clock 2017 - http://Alamongordo.Com

The reasons cited for its advancement from 2016’s time of 23:57 are painfully obvious to anyone that’s even briefly taken a glance at the news. The rise of nationalism, particularly in Europe and the US, is singled out, as is almost every aspect of the Trumpocalypse we now face ourselves with.

From his nuclear arms race sabre rattling with an increasingly aggressive Russia to his administration’s profound rejection of the science of climate change, it’s clear that the new President of the United States had a huge influence over the decision to move the clock closer to midnight.

“In the wake of the landmark Paris climate accord, the nations of the world have taken some actions to combat climate change, and global carbon dioxide emissions were essentially flat in 2016, compared to the previous year,” the official statement reads. “Still, they have not yet started to decrease; it is two and a half minutes to midnight the world continues to warm.”

“This already-threatening world situation was the backdrop for a rise in strident nationalism worldwide in 2016, including in a US presidential campaign during which the eventual victor, Donald Trump, made disturbing comments about the use and proliferation of nuclear weapons and expressed disbelief in the overwhelming scientific consensus on climate change.”

Set up by the members of The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists in response to the proliferation of nuclear weapons, the Doomsday Clock has recently come to take into account other threats – notably, climate change, which officially was taken into consideration in 2007.

DoomsDay 2017 - 2018 - http://www.alamongordo.com

Since it began, the furthest it has been from midnight was in 1991, just as the Berlin Wall fell, the Soviet Union collapsed, and the Cold War came to an end. Back then, it was a full 17 minutes away.

The closest it has ever been was back in 1953, when an uprising in occupied East Germany was crushed by Russian troops, and nuclear weapons were being manufactured – and tested – by world powers at a breakneck speed. Back then, it was two minutes to midnight.

As a point of comparison, we are closer to midnight now than we were back in 1984, when the nuclear arms race picked up speed, US cruise missiles were deployed in Europe, Russian forces had invaded Afghanistan (whose rebel fighters were ultimately funded by the US), and Reagan had recently declared the Soviet Union to be an “evil empire”.

Russian Television Warns of Nuclear War Amid US Tensions !

Russian Television Warns of Nuclear War Amid US Tensions !

With diplomatic relations between Moscow and Washington at their lowest point since the Cold War, turning on Russian television can be an alarming experience. For the past month, Russian media outlets have been punctuated with reports asking people whether they are ready for nuclear war.

US Russia Nuclear War 2017-2018 - http://Alamongordo.COM

“If it should one day happen, every one of you should know where the nearest bomb shelter is. It’s best to find out now,” according to one particularly fevered report on the Russian state-owned channel, NTV.

Russia’s main current affairs show, hosted by a presenter known by critics as the country’s propagandist-in-chief, recently spent two hours warning that Russia would defend itself with nuclear arms. “We’ve had it with American abuse over Syria,” the show’s host, Evgeny Kiselyov, told his audience. “Impudent behavior,” from the U.S. towards Russia, he said, can now take on “nuclear dimensions.”

Anti-Americanism is not rare on Russian state news, nor is an inclination for the apocalyptic. But more notable than the intensity of the warnings has been how Russian government ministries have joined in the alarms in recent weeks. Since September, Russia has conducted a nationwide civil defense drill, purportedly involving 40 million people, preparing them for catastrophes — among them nuclear fallout. Russia’s military announced who would run the country in the event of war and ran an exercise simulating that in the south.

Even more bluntly, Russia announced this week it was moving nuclear-capable ballistic missiles into its Northern European enclave, Kaliningrad, putting them within striking distance of Western capitals. In the same week, Russia test-fired 3 intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Such moves have further raised the temperature with the West, already exceptionally high since the U.S. publicly accused Moscow of trying to interfere in its presidential elections and efforts by the two countries to reach a cease-fire deal terrorists in Syria, collapsed amid mutual recrimination and the renewal of ferocious airstrikes by Russian jets on the besieged city of Aleppo.

But the blood-curdling statements and military posturing, however, are very far from heralding imminent war, analysts said. “It’s ridiculous,” said Aleksander Baunov, an analyst at the Carnegie Moscow Center. “It’s not preparation for war.”

Like other Russia observers, he said the atomic-fueled reports and exercises may have several purposes, but none of them were to prepare the populace for major conflict. The nuclear threats, while frightening, reflected an sense in Russia that they could be made without real fear of being taken sincerely.

“The ease with which people in this country use the nuclear threat in their aggressive rhetoric is truly amazing and of course alarming,” Maria Lipman, a veteran Russian analyst and editor-in-chief of Counterpoint journal.

That relative unconcern is perhaps reflected in that the war talk does not appear to have much traction among Russians. What’s more Baunov said, anti-Americanism not especially high among ordinary people currently, limited he said to official discourse.

That discourse, rather than heralding war, Baunov said, was meant to deter Western countries from intervening in Syria and in particular perhaps was meant to prevent the U.S. from responding too strongly to suspected Russian interference in the U.S. elections. Moscow, he said, is trying to set the field ahead of an incoming U.S. president, whoever wins.

“They want to touch bottom and then to try to go up,” he said. “Any responsible politician … if you are responsible and experienced, it cannot start with further downgrading already bad relations, if they are already at bottom.”

The fevered rhetoric on television and pointed deployments of nuclear launch vehicles recalled the height of the Ukraine crisis in 2014, when Russia too sought to guarantee against Western intervention and buttress support for its actions at home. This time, the chances of a real military confrontation between Russia and the U.S. have risen dramatically since Washington indicated it was considering launching airstrikes against the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to halt his brutal bombardment of Aleppo and push Moscow and Assad back to the negotiating table. Russia’s Defense Ministry has bluntly warned the U.S. not to intervene, threatening to shoot down any aircraft targeting Assad’s forces.

US-NATO Russia Nuclear War in 2017-2018 - http://www.alamongordo.com

But still few expect the Obama administration to approve such an intervention, which would abandon years of policy avoiding direct military intervention against Assad, at a moment when it also risked provoking an armed clash with Russia.

Lipman warned the two countries’ perilously diverging goals in Syria and an escalating logic in their exchanges, could see that confrontation spiral unpredictably out of control. “I think this is unprecedented,” she said. “One reckless move could turn what until know has still been a Syrian conflict into something I don’t even want to think about.”

Beyond geopolitical clashes, though, there may also be a more prosaic reason for the war talk — Russia’s military budget is currently up for consideration at a time when the economy is in trouble, weighed down by low oil prices and Western sanctions over the Kremlin’s foreign military ventures.

“The more tension the better for the Russian General Staff,” Pavel Felgenhauer, a military analyst in Moscow, said. “Tensions are going to rise and rise and rise.”

“The good news is no one really wants a war,” he added. “But it’s going to be a good show.”

For ordinary Russians it appeared an overly familiar show. Though often describing themselves as outraged by U.S. behavior in Syria, most seemed inured to the suggestions of possible nuclear doom, taking a more realistic view of the television warnings. Photos appeared on social media from a suburban apartment block where pranksters or enterprising fraudsters had pinned fliers to a stairwell asking residents to begin donating cash for the construction of a local bomb shelter.

“Hurry, places are limited,” the fliers read.
